Knitting Class for Kids

I have been trying to figure out when to schedule an after-school knitting class and I've settled on Wednesday afternoons from 2:15 until 3:15 until the Caroline After-School Enrichment program starts on March 6th.  

We will start with the basics - learning how to make a slip knot and cast on using the "backwards loop" method, the knit stitch and the purl stitch.  We'll start by making a small flag to hang on a door (make more for a garland!), and progress to making a felted pouch.  If time allows, and for those who pick it up quickly, we'll knit butterflies that teach both increasing and decreasing the number of stitches.

The MiMBY Girl started knitting last year at 5.  She learned a rhyme, which she clung onto like a lifeline, and is now slowly progressing through a garter stitch scarf for a toy dog. Knitting hones kids' fine motor skills and teaches them discipline and patience.  The best thing about knitting is that every error can be fixed, even when it means pulling out the stitches and starting over!  

Please email me if you are interested in signing up.  The classes will be February 6, 13, 20, 27.  Signing up for all 4 classes will be $30 or $10/class.  In addition, students will need to purchase size 7, 8, or 9 wooden knitting needles - I recommend going to Michael's or AC Moore for the Clover wooden needles (they have online coupons and needles are rarely on sale).  I have a lot of stray balls of yarn that I can get the kids started with and I can guide you on purchasing yarn as your child progresses to larger projects.
